Music Video
I absolutely love Carrie Underwood, not only is she an amazing singer, songwriter, and performer, she also has the best music videos in which all tells the audience a story. The music video "Blown Away" is a combination of narrative, performative, and conceptual. As you listen to Carrie's lyrics they correspond to the video, she is telling the viewer a story as the storm comes roaring in. Carrie is the main character in the video but also through out the video it changes from the story (what is currently happening) to Carrie performing (singing) into the camera. I find this method very effective and grabs the viewers attention.
Some visual elements used are color, tone, space, line, and movement. Carrie's opening scene starts off in black and white color, in which takes place in a small kitchen with her and her father in silence. This sets the tone of the video. He continues to drink his sins away as he burst in outrage at Carrie. As she walks out the room showing movement the camera shifts from her to ending the scene focusing on the father. The scene shifts to a close up of Carrie, you can hear the thunder in the back ground changing the color and tone to a warm saturated tan, this is when the music starts. The scenes shift between her singing outside in a horizontal open field, to her walking in a mid-dark cemetery with some color, to her father drinking in the house still in black and white. As her lyrics continue to follow her movements, emotions and feelings. The storm gets stronger and so does the story, a tornado is approaching as she runs into the house which is in color. She tries to wake up her drunken father but he's passed out, so she runs to the cellar. The camera following behind her, it shows her singing on the bed from a birds eye view. She lays there reminiscing her fathers outrage, as the scenes shift back and forth her father continues to be shown in black and white. The ending is the most significant as she walks out the cellar the camera is following her up the stairs when she reaches the top the grass is bright green, the sky is crystal blue, the brightness of the colors gives me a happy feeling, theres light at the end of the tunnel. The camera then ends with a horizontal scene of the open field with a yellow road down the middle providing deep space.
